PAC raises $107,500 for scholarships

Palo Alto College hosted its ¡Celebración! on Friday, Sept. 27 in the College’s Botanical Gardens near the recently reopened Ozuna Library and Learning Center. The annual event, which benefits the PAC Scholarship Endowment Fund, raised $107,500 through sponsorships and donations.

The Palo Alto College Scholarship Endowment Fund takes part in the U.S. Department of Education Title V Endowment Challenge Grant Program, where gifts from private sources are matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000 per year. With this grant, Palo Alto College was able to reach its first $1 million endowment in 2011, and the total now nears $1.9 million.

Special guests at the 2013 ¡Celebración! included City Councilman for District 4 Rey Saldaña, City Councilman for District 8 Ron Nirenberg, and Bexar County Judge Irene Rios. Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees members Anna Bustamante (District 3 and current Secretary), Dr. Yvonne Katz (District 7 and current Assistant Secretary), and Joe Alderete (District 1) also attended.

Nearly 20 students served as volunteers and greeters at the event. Musical performances included student pianist Damien Cavazos; Juan and Armando Tejeda and Conjunto Palo Alto; PAC Jazz Ensemble; Juan Ortiz and Mariachi Palomino; and featured performers, Bombasta, “San Antonio’s Barrio Big Band.”

The night’s festivities culminated with the unveiling and lighting of a signature sculpture designed by renowned artist and PAC professor Cakky Brawley. The sculpture will be a permanent feature as part of the Palo Alto College Botanical Gardens.
